Maidens support driver progression to combat industry recruitment challenges

The challenges of HGV Driver recruitment are often a hot topic of discussion in the haulage industry. With a lack of drivers coming into the industry hauliers must look at effective ways to attract potential employees, whether they’re currently working in the haulage industry or not and retain skilled employees.

Combating these challenges, Maidens, a haulage and warehousing company based in Telford, have operated a progression scheme for many years which has eased the pressure and helps to ensure that they have a reliable workforce of professional, dedicated employees.

The most recent example is Tamara, a Class 1 qualified Driver who joined Maidens with a class 2 license in December 2017. Tamara quickly demonstrated her dedication to the team and fantastic work ethic which earned her positive feedback from customers such as: “She was cheerful, polite and a credit to your company and road haulage” (Centre for Alternative Technology).

Progression was always on the cards and in May 2018, Maidens put Tamara through her Class 1 which she passed with flying colours.

Maidens have employed this tactic many times over the years as eight other drivers joined the team with a Class 2 license and have been progressed to Class 1.

However, notably the majority of drivers that Maidens have put through the training joined the team with just a car licence and have since advanced through to Class 1. They have done this with over 13 employees over the last 3-4 years who are still with them today.

Managing Director of Maidens, John Maiden commented

“This has been a great way to fulfil our recruitment needs and it is rewarding seeing the team progress and support each other. It’s about giving people opportunities and our progression scheme helps to create a positive environment where employees are rewarded for their hard work and dedication and can see a long-term future working with Maiden’s.”

The progression scheme gets a lot of attention in the local area and as a result, Maidens have seen an increase in job applications and interest in working for the company.
